Ah a fresh year. And with a fresh year comes the classic New Years’ Resolutions. Of course, we can make resolutions at any point in the year but there’s something about 01.01 that I think makes us all particularly determined to do things differently.
Coming into the New Year, I of course made a note of the things I want to quit and some of the things I want to usher in. But on the glorious 01.01 I had a moment that felt like a setback – a betrayal to one of my resolutions…
The beauty from this moment is that it offered a freeing realisation that I believe is worth sharing.
A change may have started through your resolve but time is needed for the results to fully manifest – we call this a process.
At this time of year, some of us will get discouraged because we’ve decided to make a change and don’t yet see the results of the change. But rarely ever do the results show up on Day 1. A change may have started through your resolve but time is needed for the results to fully manifest – we call this a process.
If we think about it in fitness terms (a classic NY resolution), it would be unreasonable to think that just because you decided that from 01.01 you would start going to the gym and eating healthier, the results will also show on 01.01. The same goes with any other resolution you have made: whether it’s to have healthier thought patterns, develop new friendships or start a business – such things require a process.
Me to me: You mean it’s 01.01 and nothing’s changed? Of course, not. It’s Day 1.
In that moment that felt like a setback I had to remind myself (and I would like to remind you too), to walk out the process. It may seem like nothing is changing but keep showing up each day: keep shutting down those negative thoughts, keep showing up at the gym, keep ignoring that text, keep building on that idea. In those moments where you refrain from doing the “old” and lean in to the “new”, something is being developed in you. You will see the results in due time…trust the process.
Stay true to the resolve
The fact that you have made a resolve is powerful in itself. Stay true to the resolve. Even on days you experience a setback, remind yourself of your resolve and why you made it in the first place.
I have decided to ______. No turning back.
