I was speaking to a friend recently and telling them about an idea I have. I explained how there was a particular step I couldn’t yet take until something else happened. They simply asked me “why do you need that before you start?” I quickly realised that I didn’t really have a valid reason – it was more fear than anything that was keeping me from taking the next step. Fear of the unknown, failure and the likes.
That moment reminded me of a bible passage I recently read in Luke 19:11-27, which is the parable of the talents. I’ve written about this parable in a previous blog post – God is expecting a return on his investment in you – which discusses how we have a responsibility to make use of the talents (gifts, skillset) that God has deposited in us. But as I read this parable again, my takeaway was a lot more simple. My takeaway was simply to do something.
Do something
The “something” does not have to be huge. The master in the parable (representing God) was equally as pleased with the servant who earned ten more talents and the servant who earned five more. He was only angry with the servant who brought back nothing. The master’s response shows he just wanted the servant to have done something with what he was given: “why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.” (Luke 19:23).
We need to take a step of faith
I was quite amazed when I realised this…God just wants us to do something with what we are given. He understands our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15) and wants to help us along the way but we need to give Him something to work with. We need to take a step of faith.
We have a responsibility to occupy until Jesus comes
We have a responsibility to occupy until Jesus comes (Luke 19:13) but some of us need to start by simply doing something with the dreams and ideas God has placed on our hearts. From there we will find the momentum “to occupy” – to be in a continual state of productivity and usefulness until Jesus returns.
On that note of simply doing something, I invite you to follow my new instagram page: The Burden Is Light (“TBIL”). Stay tuned…
